Gandhi Gatha: a discourse everyone needs

As the International Webinar on The Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in the 21st Century : Philosophies, Political ideas and Socio-Spiritual Dimensions came to an end on the 5th and the last day of the Lecture Series on 7th October, 2020 organised by The Department of History, Kirori Mal College and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), the participants shared their knowledge and understanding which was enhanced by the prior lectures.

On 7th October, the platform of the Webinar was thrown open to all the participants for learning through the discourse of debate and discussion. Due to the constraints of the online platform and managing between two different time zones, the organizing committee could not give chance for a discussion that usually follows after a lecture. However, the organizing committee was aware that no clarity could be gained in the field of social sciences without allowing the scholars to discuss and debate and thus on the last day Gandhi Gatha was organized where everyone was given a time slot to voice their opinions and anyone can contradict or further agree and explain with the said point.

This not only enhanced each others’ knowledge, but also gave everyone an opportunity to interact with each other without being present physically. As the field of social sciences is full of creatives and thus the platform was not only limited to discourse of debate and discussion, but also to performative art.

Students of the History Department of Kirori Mal College, namely Rohini Rana (3rd Year), Shambhavi Jha (2nd Year) and Surbhi Dwivedi (3rd Year) presented a medley of songs to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The songs sang by them were Raghupati Raghav, Vaishnav Jan To and Sabarmati Ke Sant respectively. The Webinar was finally addressed by Prof. Altaf Hussain, Prof. Sumit Kumar and Prof. Dushyant Kumar, who are the faculty of the History Department of Kirori Mal College and the session was moderated by Jatin Gogia (3rd Year) and Kaustubh Bhatnagar (2nd Year).

The session was participated not only by students, but also from various faculties and it enriched the knowledge altogether. Everyone was overwhelmed with the warmth of the Gandhi Gatha, especially given the hard times.

The Webinar would not have been possible without the due efforts of Dr. Amit Kumar Suman and the organizing committee of the History Department of Kirori Mal College.
